The Summer Issue

Just in time for the Summer Solstice, the July/August issue of Martha Stewart Living is arriving in subscriber mailboxes and will be on newsstands next week. I love the cover with its fresh berries and whipped cream. Inside promises to be a great celebration of summer themes. I can't wait to page through it slowly, sitting outside under a shady tree.

Whatever research MSL does , it must show that "food" covers sell magazines. Although month after month there are negative comments about the limited scope of MSL covers (no matter how attractive they may be)..they keep coming! Maybe it is just me, but the incredible garden/decorative photos hidden within the magazine deserve to appear on some covers.

If one understands the concept of a cover one can see why food is on the cover. Eye catching colors. Appeals to an impulse hunger or shopping. It is compact and allows for the copy headlines to motivate you to act at the Point of purchase as the covers are for the news stands or market check out lanes.

I am sure there is some level of correctness, to the above analysis. It does discount the many years of success of the magazine had with a multiplicity of covers all of which ilistrated the array of subject matter that was contained in the magazine. I believe this would appeal to many different prospective subscribers other then just "foodies".

Andrew,
I thought you might find this interesting .
In a recent blog ( http://www.marcusdesigninc.com/2016/06/photographer-q-tracey-ayton.html)
was about a very successful magazine photographer Tracy Ayton and her comment re her influence was very interesting......

Question: Who or what has been your greatest professional influence?

Answer: I have every single Martha Stewart publication …… I’ve poured over the photographs over and over again. I’d say that her magazines are my textbooks. I love her! You can see her influence reflected in both my home and my photography style

It is a pleasure to know even the most successful of photographers appreciate Ms Stewart's publications.
