The April Issue

Some subscribers have begun to receive the April issue of Martha Stewart Living, and it will arrive on newsstands in a week. With Easter being in March this year, the April issue is devoted instead to spring themes, such as seasonal recipes, planting a vegetable garden, flowers and organizing. At just 118 pages, the issue is quite thin but the content sounds promising. I'm not a big fan of the cover. I miss the thoughtful styling this magazine's covers were once known for.

This might be a duplicate........

I have not received the April issue as of yet, but I must say that the cover leaves much to be desired!
The content of the recent months issues has been interesting and beautifully photographed........as such why has the cover been allowed to be so completely uninspired and lackluster?

I have to say that is my least favorite cover of Living ever. When I look at it for more than a few seconds, I almost become physically ill. It looks like something that was pre-chewed and then vomited up.

What an unappetizing cover! I also agree that the contents of the last few issues have been interesting and appealing but why the thrown food look for the cover - yuk!
It's probably a good thing that I have a subscription because I certainly would never be drawn to purchase this. Do you think that any of the people in charge are listening to us when we give our opinion? Maybe we need to complain directly to the magazine rather than just chat on about these covers. huh?

I agree with you. This cover could easily be any other food or lifestyle related publication. Nothing about it says Martha Stewart. I also miss the days when they limited the amount of type on the cover.

I thought Martha personally selected all of the cover photos? I can't believe she of all people has been picking these repetitive, unimaginative photos. Remember the Easter basket from a few years ago with the bunny, the purple flowers, and the gorgeous striped eggs? THAT was a Martha cover! I wonder if she is losing interest somewhat in the magazine?

I'm sad to say the inside of the magazine isn't much better. I know it sounds awful, but I really don't care about Martha's haircare regiment. The heart and soul of the magazine is gone. It no longer has a point of view. I feel like it's trying to be all things to all people. Trying to hang on to existing customers while simultaneously attracting new ones. And everyone getting lost because of it. :(

As an additional comment about MSL covers.
My co-op library has framed groups of various magazine covers as art work ( i.e. New Yorker, Architectural Digest, and Martha Stewart Living) . The MSL covers have proven to be the most popular ....luckily we had the old issues to use as I can not think of one recent issue which would make the grade **!

**besides choice of subject, it has to do with the above mentioned excessive verbiage on the cover.

I actually just finished reading through the April issue of Living and to be perfectly honest, I didn't find all that much that interested me. Sometimes the recipes are a bit over the top for regular home cooking and many of those featured were. I've already given my opinion on the cover, but noticing one other thing - I have to say that $4.99USA for this issue would not be something I would consider paying. I truly hope that the new editor in chief will be able to adjust some of the contents to make Living more in line with it's former status. I too agree that there's too much type on the cover - a picture is worth a thousand words - but it has to be a terrific picture, not ugly looking food.

John, I don't think Martha chooses the covers anymore.

When I worked there, Martha wasn't focused at all on the magazine nor merchandising. All she focused on was her daily show. And being a celebrity. And now a grandmother. She very clearly has limited involvement in the company.

Jamie I read an interview with Martha from 2002 in which she said she always chooses the cover and that the magazine doesn't go to print until she says so. But that was 14 years ago and before her legal trouble. I'm sure a lot has changed.

Not sure why some of the comments are making a big fuss about the cover as if it was dog food? It looks so good. Like pita bread with strained greek yogurt, olive oil, spinach, salt and sesame seeds. I've had something similar and its really good. Very Mediterranean.

I can't speak for others but this specific cover and others have to me no design esthetic. There is no grace or beauty or no real thought of what MSL has meant to many ......it is just a photo of food, no place seating, no decor!
