Paint Can Design

With Martha Stewart's new paint line set to hit the shelves at Home Depot in March, anticipation is high among those of us who have been scrambling these last several months to locate any Martha Stewart paint at all. Formerly available at Lowe's and Kmart, there has been a dry spell on the market where Martha's paint is concerned as the company phases out its relationships with those two retailers.

In conjunction with a new line of all-natural cleaning products, outdoor furniture and organizational pieces, such as storage units and cabinets, consumers can expect to see 200 colours in the new Martha Stewart Living paint collection at Home Depot this spring in the U.S. and Canada.
The design of the paint cans has a bold, retro feel to it. I'm assuming the label was designed by Doyle Partners in NYC, the design firm headed up by Stephen Doyle, husband of Gael Towey, who is the Chief Creative Officer at Martha's company. Doyle has been responsible for most of the company's branding designs, including the Martha Stewart Everyday packaging and the Martha Stewart Collection packaging at Macy's. The paint itself was developed by AkzoNobel, in partnership with Home Depot, and is quick-drying with low odour and low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) ensuring a safe and pleasant painting experience. I'm anxious to see the full colour palette! (Big thanks to Kenn for sending the image!)

I believe the packaging is all done in-house by the retail team, not Doyle Partners. Stephen did however design the 'mark' that you see on all packaging, magazines, web, etc.

Anonymous, you can see the packaging design for the Macy's and Kmart lines at doylepartners.com under the various links at the left. Stephen Doyle created the new round logo, yes, and actually made a plaster cast of it, which is currently hanging at the Omnimedia offices.

The packaging is beautiful and I'm excited to hear she's moving to Home Depot, but crap... I just repainted my house in all Lowes Martha Stewart colors. I guess I'll have to stock up on extra paint and swatches asap!

Mo, do you mean the background image at the top? It's from an older issue of Martha Stewart Living - a story about pewter. 2002, I believe.

No, I mean the loveley circle design pattern.

Ah, my friend Christine designed it for me. Isn't it nice?

LOVE IT!

We love the Martha Stewart paint purchased in Kmart awhile back. The quality in superior to most we have purchased in the past. Will the paint be manufactured with the same processes that will ensure the same quality?

The manufacturer of the paint, AkzoNobel, is not the same company that made the Everyday brand of paint, so it's difficult to tell yet how the quality will compare. I'm assuming it's of very good quality, since it was purchased by Home Depot: as good as, if not better than, the Everyday line of paints.
